Tea Meditation

Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. Scholars have found meditation difficult to define, as practices vary both between traditions and within them[IWIKIPEDIA].


Since meditation is to train our attention to achieve inner peace, anything which will help us to be focused can be practiced. For tea lovers, that is tea meditation. Tea meditation is the mediation by practicing tea(tea ceremony), drinking tea, feeling tea, and appreciating tea.


Tea meditation is not a modern practice, it can be dated back to the origin of Buddhism and Taoism. There’s a legendary story about that tea was created because of Sakyamuni. In order to complete his meditation and would not fall asleep, he cut off his eyelids and threw them on the ground. The next day, they turned into a few tea trees. After chewing the tea leaves, Sakyamuni got concentrated and peaceful. Finally, 49 days later, he enlightened and became the buddha of buddhas.















Tea meditation is the best way to start a wonderful day as soon as you get up, it is followed as the three sessions.


Session 1: Prepare the tea 准备


By preparing water, tea wares, tea sample, and playing a piece of soft music, will help us to get ourselves into the status of meditation.



Meditation is a peaceful activity, it’s better to choose some aromatic soft and mild tea. Therefore, aged white tea, light black tea, and aged pu'er tea are quite ideal for tea meditation.


Session 2: Brewing the tea 泡茶


Tea meditation should be done ritually, following the procedure of the tea ceremony, and tips of brewing skills. The participants should make tea naturally, softly at the same pace, meanwhile, adjust the breath.



By fishing the tea ceremony, it will aid in focusing, getting into the second status.



By making a good cup of tea, it is able to bring us the right atmosphere.


Session 3: Appreciate the tea &Meditation 感恩茶&冥想


Serve yourself a cup of tea, to sip it with gratitude.



Then, find a comfortable place, sit down in Lotus-posture. Put your hands on the knees or hold a cup of warm tea, and then put your hands in the middle of the legs.


Then, close your eyes, follow the music, to feel the tea infusion flow in your whole body again,  till reaching each angle of your body. After a few rounds, imagine that it return to one point, like Tian Men Acupoint(right middle of your forehead).



At such status, have a pleasant image, it might be somewhere you eager to visit, or the gathering of your family or lover, or your gold has come true.


Start with a beautiful scene, follow your mind, let it lead you anywhere. During such a special journey, you might seek some inspirtations or answers to your life.



Meditation lasts 5 minutes or 10 minutes, it depends on you. You may set up an alarm with soft music before starting the meditation.



After the meditation, you may drink some more tea, then start a great day.

冥想结束后,可以再喝一杯茶, 正式开启美好的一天。
